The Little Things We Take With Us

2 min read

I've been thinking about something lately.

How funny it is that certain people leave us with the most unexpected little things.

Not necessarily photographs or souvenirs.

Sometimes it's a ridiculous memory of eating pizza in bed, in the middle of the night, when neither of you had any business being awake.

Or a particular box of chocolates that could make you smile before you'd even opened it.

And sometimes, it's something as simple as the way someone said your name.

A version of it you'd never heard before.

One that somehow sounded different coming from them.

I find that rather lovely.

How someone can become part of our little world without either of us realizing it.

They introduce us to things we never thought we'd enjoy.

They make us laugh at jokes that probably aren't particularly funny.

They show us different ways of looking at life.

And sometimes, without even trying, they teach us a little something about ourselves.

Perhaps to be braver.

To laugh more freely.

To be a little less afraid of showing affection.

Or simply to appreciate those wonderfully ordinary moments that turn out to be anything but ordinary.

And then life happens.

People take different paths.

Some stay, some don't.

And some we may never see again.

But I don't think that makes their place in our story any less meaningful.

Because I like to believe we carry little pieces of the people who mattered to us.

Not in a sad way.

More like a collection of lovely little discoveries.

A new favorite song.

A different perspective.

A little more courage.

And perhaps a slightly questionable habit of eating pizza at midnight 🤭

I suppose that's one of the beautiful things about meeting someone.

You never quite know what they'll leave you with.

And sometimes, long after the last conversation, you realize that knowing someone helped you become a slightly different version of yourself.

One you're rather happy to be.

Perhaps your paths will never cross again.

No more unexpected coffees, late-night conversations, or ridiculous little adventures.

And that's okay.

Because not every person who changes our lives is meant to remain in them.

Some simply leave us with a few wonderful memories, a little more wisdom, and a version of ourselves we might never have discovered otherwise.

And if I could wish one thing for those people, it would be something very simple.

That life is kind to them.

That they find plenty of reasons to laugh, people who make their ordinary days feel special, and all the happiness they once helped bring into mine.

Even if I never get to hear about any of it.

Especially then, perhaps.

Because sometimes, the loveliest thing we can carry from a story is the ability to smile at how beautiful it was, wish the other person a wonderful life, and leave it there.

With nothing more to say.

Just a little gratitude.

And a very genuine wish that life treats them beautifully 🤍
