The Things You Discover Over Dinner

2 min read

I think you can learn quite a lot about someone over dinner.

How they choose their wine.

Whether they prefer pasta or something more adventurous.

How easily they laugh.

And, apparently, whether they're capable of keeping their hands to themselves.

I remember one particular dinner.

Wonderful wine. Delicious pasta. A dessert we ended up sharing.

Nothing particularly extraordinary on paper.

But I remember thinking how lovely it all felt.

The conversation, the laughter, the little moments between one course and the next.

And I suspect that evening someone discovered a rather romantic side of me.

Although, to be fair, I don't exactly make an enormous effort to hide it.

For example, I have a habit of sharing my dessert with people who matter to me.

Not everyone, obviously.

Let's not get carried away.

Dessert is serious business 🤭

But when someone is special, somehow the last spoonful becomes something I want to share.

And then there's the touching.

A hand resting on his arm.

My fingers finding his.

A little caress in the middle of a conversation.

Apparently, when I'm happy with someone, my hands develop a complete inability to behave.

And the kisses?

Well.

If there were a legal limit to the number of kisses permitted during one evening, I'm fairly certain I would have been found guilty.

Repeatedly.

With absolutely no intention of appealing the verdict.

I suppose that's simply how I am when I feel comfortable enough to let my romantic side take over.

Affectionate.

A little playful.

Probably far too generous with kisses.

And willing to share my dessert.

Which, if you know me, is actually a rather significant declaration.

I don't remember that dinner because of anything particularly grand.

I remember it because I was happy.

Because everything felt easy.

And because, for a few lovely hours, I got to be completely myself.

Perhaps that's what makes certain dinners so memorable.

Not the restaurant.

Not even the wine.

But the wonderful feeling of being exactly who you are, with someone you're happy to share a little more of yourself with.

Including the last spoonful of dessert.

And believe me, that's saying something 🤍
